Melting Pot Is More than a Metaphor in Portland
In a city of experimenters, artists, and free-thinkers, where cultural and culinary influences from around the globe have converged to mingle and blend, food is an essential part of the Portland experience. Endless combinations of every world cuisine are here for you to sample and explore, whether it’s in the back of a Mercado, off of one of our world-renowned food carts, or under the reclaimed wood ceiling of a rustic white linen restaurant. In Portland, our cuisine is anything but ordinary.
A Different Approach to Groceries
Part of our commitment to a better way of life is taking advantage of the locally caught seafood, organically raised meat and poultry, and sustainably grown produce Oregon has to offer. Our backyard is filled with Willamette hops, pinot noir grapes, dungeness crab, king salmon, Willapa Bay oysters, famous cheeses, endless grass-fed beef, Gravenstein apples, pears, hood strawberries, hazelnuts, and of course the greatest berry of them all: the marionberry. It’s all about the ingredients, and Portland definitely has them.
Farmers’ Markets
While you’re in Portland, be sure to stock up on all that is fresh and locally-grown at any of our expansive farmers’ markets, where our city’s agricultural roots run deep. We recommend shopping at any of these markets, depending on your schedule and time of year:
- Portland State University – Mar. – Nov., Saturdays 8:30 AM – 2 PM
- Pioneer Courthouse Square – Jun. – Sept., Mondays 10 AM to 2 PM
- Kenton – Jun. – Sept., 3 PM to 7 PM
Food Carts
Food carts are Portland’s way of bringing the city’s renowned cuisine out of the restaurants and out to where the people are. Explosions of flavor and culinary influences make for delicious, cheap eating wherever you go, but the very best spots for food cart action are:
- SW 10th + Alder
- SE 12th + Hawthorne
- SE 72nd + Foster
- SW 4th + Washington
- SW 4th + Hall
